Dequantes Devontay Lamar was born on October 4, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. His father Corey Lamar is the CEO of Linwood Agency, and the manager of his son. In Atlanta, Quan attended Georgia's Ronald McNair Sr. High School. In school, he was very shy. He had keen interest in poetry, literature, and creative writing. He loved to read.

In high school, he played baseball for over four years, and was keen to play professionally. He played as center fielder and leadoff hitter at the varsity level during his freshman year. Due to his sportsmanship, he received a scholarship offer from Fort Valley State University. During this period, he also developed an interest in rapping, and got a job at an airport. When Quan lost his job, he got involved in illegal activities, including stealing and burglary, which eventually landed him in jail for 15 months.Quan has three sons—Devin D. Lamar, Royal R. Lamar, and Khosen K. Lamar.

In 2012, Rich Homie Quan released his debut mixtape, ‘I Go In On Every Song’. His first single, ‘Difference’ was also released in 2012 from his mixtape, ‘Still Going In’. ‘Still Goin In’ (reloaded) was named the 10th best mixtape of 2013 by ‘Rolling Stone.’

In 2013, he toured with rapper Trinidad James. In the same year, he was featured on Gucci Mane's album ‘Trap House III’ on songs like ‘Can't Trust Her’, ‘I Heard’, and ‘Chasin' Paper’. In August 2013, Def Jam Recordings released Quan’s single ‘Type of Way’. The ‘New York Times’ reviewed this single, which peaked at No. 50 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and said that he was a part of Atlanta’s rising generation of rappers “who deliver lines with melody and heart”. YG had featured Quan on the song ‘My Nigga’ along with Young Jeezy. The song peaked at No.19 on the Hot 100. He was also featured on the song ‘Extra’ in 2 Chainz' second studio album ‘B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time.’ On November 26, 2013, his next mixtape called ‘I Promise I'll Never Stop Going In’ was launched. That year, Michigan State Spartans football team adopted ‘Type of Way’ as an anthem.

Career

Rich Homie Quan has been involved in several controversies. From 2009-11, he served a 15-month jail term on charges of burglary. Once Child Protective Services reportedly investigated him after he shared a video which showed his infant son sitting on his lap, while he was allegedly smoking weed. Yet another controversy happened following the leak of a song where he rapped about raping. Quan later apologized in a statement saying that the song was "not intended to be released".

On May 28, 2017, Quan and five others were arrested in Middle Georgia on charges of possessing marijuana. They reportedly aimed to distribute it at a police checkpoint outside the city. He was arrested on his way to a concert in Wadley and was taken to jail, but was bonded out on a $20,000 cash bond.
