Ray Dalio was born as Raymond Dalio on August 1, 1949 in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, USA to Marino Dallolio and his wife Ann. He attended the Long Island University and obtained his bachelor's degree in finance from there. Later, he received his MBA degree from the Harvard Business School.
Dalio has been married to Barbara since 1976/77. The couple has four sons including film director Paul Dalio. Another of the couple’s sons, Matthew A. "Matt" Dalio, is the chairman and founder of the non-profit organization, China Care Foundation, as well as the CEO of the computer operating system agency, Endless Mobile.
After completing his education, Ray Dalio started working at the New York Stock Exchange and began trading commodity futures. He then went on to serve as the Director of Commodities at the Dominick & Dominick LLC. Then in the year 1974, he became a futures broker and trader at Shearson Hayden Stone.
In 1975, he founded his investment management firm named Bridgewater Associates. Today, it is one of the world’s largest hedge funds. Dalio served as the co-CEO of the firm for ten months before he announced his decision to step down in March 2017. Jon Rubinstein, co-CEO of the fund, also stepped down with him. However, he retained an advisory role.
In 2013, Dalio shared his economic theories and investment secrets on YouTube through a 30-minute video titled ‘How the Economic Machine Works’. As of now, the video has gardened about 4.8 million views. This video has also been translated in other languages including Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, and German.

Talking about Dalio’s achievements further, he once appeared on Time Magazines’ list of ‘100 most influential people in the world’ and Bloomberg Markets’ ‘50 Most Influential people’ list. As of February 2018, Dalio is one of the world's 100 richest people, according to Bloomberg. On a personal note, the American investor is a great philanthropist. He has joined Warren Buffett and Bill Gates’ pledge, promising to give more than half of his fortune to charitable foundations within his lifetime. Through his Dalio Foundation, he has directed millions of dollars in donations to the David Lynch Foundation, an organization that sponsors and promotes research on Transcendental Meditation.
