OMI was born as Omar Samuel Pasley on 3 September 1986 in Clarendon, Jamaica, to Rachel and Kenroy Pasley. His father was a musician who died when OMI was nine. OMI has three older siblings. He completed his schooling from Garvey Maceo High School. At the age of 15, he moved to New York with his aunt. After his aunt's death, OMI again moved back to Jamaica at 18 years of age. Personal Life

OMI initially got signed to an independent Jamaican label called Oufah. His first recorded song was titled "Standing On All Threes" that was released with a music video. In 2008, he composed his future hit track "Cheerleader". However, this song was eventually released only in 2012. Meanwhile, he put out numerous local hits in Jamaica including "Fireworks", "Take It Easy" and "Color of My Lips”.

In 2014, the singer’s track "Cheerleader" got a second life when the president of Ultra Music, Patrick Moxey, offered to remix the song and re-launch it. German DJ Felix Jaehn was commissioned to remix it. After its release, the remix became a grand hit, topping various charts both in the USA and the UK. It made history in May 2015 when the song topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks in a row, marking the longest consecutive time period any Jamaican singer has held that position on the chart.

On August 27, 2015, OMI released his single "Hula Hoop". Two months later, he released his debut album titled ‘Me 4 U’ that included the songs "Cheerleader", "Stir It", "Hula Hoop" and "Drop In the Ocean".
