Nick Hexum was born as Nicholas Lofton Hexum, on April 12, 1970, in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, to parents Pat and Dr. Terry Hexum. He has two siblings: brother Zack and sister Angela. Hexum studied at Westside High School.
He dated singer Nicole Scherzinger for a while and got engaged to her. However, he separated from her in 2004. Later Hexum went on to marry Nikki, a painter and writer, in 2008. The couple has three daughters: Echo Love Hexum, Maxine, and Harlow.
Musically inclined from a young age, Nick Hexum played in several local bands like ‘The Eds’, ‘The Extras’, ‘Unity’ and ‘The Right Profile’ when he was a teenager. In 1988, he teamed up with a few like-minded friends to found the musical band 311. Eventually, he also formed his own record company titled ‘What Have You Records’ to release 311 titles. The band released four EPs/albums titled ‘Unity’, ‘Hydroponic,’ ‘Dammit’ and ‘Downstairs’ before signing a contract with Capricorn Records in 1992.
The band 311 released several albums afterward including ‘Music’, ‘Grassroots’, ‘Transistor’, ‘Soundsystem’, ‘From Chaos’, ‘Evolver’, ‘Don't Tread on Me’, ‘Uplifter’, ‘Universal Pulse’, ‘Stereolithic’ and ‘Mosaic’. Hexum then got featured in the Joe Strummer album ‘Chef Aid: The South Park Album’ in the track ‘It's a Rockin' World’. He also contributed vocals for the song ‘Age of Consent.’ The American singer also collaborated with the band The Urge for the album ‘Master of Styles’.
During the 2004 presidential elections, Hexum hit the road with his musician brother, Zack, in support of John Kerry. The duo performed some of their own songs as well as covered their favorites from various artistes and bands like XTC, The Clash, Bob Marley, Coldplay, The Beatles, and Radiohead.
In August 2013, the singer announced his side project ‘The Nick Hexum Quintet’, featuring Nick, his brother Zack, Gary Novak, Andres Rebellon, and Luke Miller. The band’s debut album named ‘My Shadow Pages’ was released on October 1, 2013.
