Childhood & Early Life

He grew up listening to the ‘Christian Radio and pop music’ and slowly it became a part of him. Due to his family’s beliefs, he could only listen to Christian faith based music and his mother often took him to Christian rock concerts. His father was a musician during his young days, so Mullins had his family’s support through his music journey.

Childhood & Early Life

According to him, the ‘Christian Contemporary Music Groups’ (CCM), such as ‘Audio Adrenaline,’ ‘Petra,’ and ‘MercyMe,’ among others, made a huge impression on him. After graduating from the school, he initially played with a number of local music groups in Spokane and also did jobs like selling shoes at Nordstrom’s.

Childhood & Early Life

The band ‘Memphis May Fire’ was formed in 2006, and their lead singer, Chase Ryan, left the band in 2008. Thereafter, the band took open auditions for a replacement, but didn’t find a suitable candidate even after more than hundred auditions. Mullins sent his tape to the Dallas-based group and was selected. He was 19 when he joined ‘Memphis May Fire’ in 2008.

The first album that he did with the band was ‘Sleepwalking’ in 2009, followed by an EP, ‘Between the Lies’ in 2010. His subsequent albums with the band were ‘The Hollow’ (2011), ‘Challenger’ (2012), ‘Unconditional’ (2014), and ‘This Light I Hold’ (2016). The album ‘Unconditional’ debuted at number 4 on the ‘Billboard 200’ and their next album, ‘This Light I Hold,’ was also a commercial success. Along with being the lead vocalist, he is also the main song-writer for the group. Through his songs, he often expresses his own (religious) beliefs and his experiences during his years of struggle.

A controversy arose during a ‘Memphis May Fire’ show in the ‘2013 Vans Warped Tour,’ when Mullins criticized some girls in the audience, as he found their way of dressing indecent. A number of people felt insulted and he faced a lot of criticism. Through interviews, he later apologized for his choice of words.

He released his solo album ‘Matty Mullins’ in 2014. For this album, he worked with Cameron Mitzell, who looked after the instrumental and programming part. (Mitzell has produced records for ‘Memphis May Fire’ as well as other contemporaries, including ‘Sleeping with Sirens,’ ‘The Word Alive,’ ‘Capture the Crown’ among others). The two of them started the work for an EP, but when the work progressed well, they decided on a complete album.
