Matthew James Moy was born in San Francisco, California, on February 3, 1984, to a family of Chinese origin. His father was a high school teacher by profession and his mother was a professional language therapist. He has one sister. When Moy was young, his parents got divorced.
He went to the University of California, Davis, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Japanese and a minor in linguistics.

Matthew Moy made his acting debut on television in 2008 with a small role in the American television comedy series ‘Mind of Mencia’. He was seen playing the character of a short man in the eighth episode of the fourth season. He then appeared in ‘iCarly’, an American teen sitcom, portraying the character of ‘Shawn’ in 2009. He also made an appearance in the short film titled ‘Non-Sequitur’ as ‘Dallas’. The same year, he played ‘Louis’ in the hugely popular American sitcom ‘How I Met Your Mother’ alongside Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, Josh Radnor, and Alyson Hannigan.
He played the character of ‘Trang’ in 2009 and 2010 in ‘Scrubs’, an American medical comedy-drama television series first aired on NBC and later on ABC.
