Mark Derek Foster was born on February 29, 1984 in San Jose, California, the USA. He attended Nordonia High School. In 2013, he bought a $2.1 million property in Hollywood Hills from popular actor Maurice Benard.
During the initial days of his career, he struggled with drug addiction. His then-roommate, actor/singer Brad Renfro, also struggled with addiction, dying from drug overdose in January 2008. Foster’s song "Downtown" reflects on the life and death of Brad Renfro.
Foster has a tattoo of boxing gloves. He got the tattoo in order to honor his late boxer grandfather. One of Mark Foster's chief musical influences is the band The Beach Boys.
In 2002, Mark Foster moved to Los Angeles to pursue his musical dreams. Initially, he didn’t achieve much success. At the age of 22, he got the chance to work with Aftermath Entertainment. Unfortunately, the deal fell through and Foster was left heartbroken. Then in 2008, he landed a job as a jingle writer for the label Mophonics.
The following year, he recorded and released his debut solo album titled ‘Solo Songs’ that included demo versions of the two tracks from the ‘Torches’ album, titled "Don't Stop” and "I Would Do Anything for You”. Also in October 2009, Mark Foster collaborated with his longtime friend Jacob Fink and colleague Mark Pontius to form the band Foster the People and went on to release their first single "Pumped up Kicks”.
In May 2010, the band signed a multi-album deal with Startime International. They released their self-titled debut EP in January 2011. This EP featured the single ‘Pumped up Kicks’ which went on to be nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
On May 23, 2011, Foster and his band mates released their debut studio album called ‘Torches.’ The album became a hit and earned the American singer his second Grammy Award nomination. Then in March 2014, Foster the People came up with their second album, ‘Supermodel’ that went on become their highest peaking album on the Billboard 200 at #3. A year later, Mark Foster produced the soundtrack for the drama film ‘Little Boy.’ On July 21, 2017, he and his band members released its third album titled ‘Sacred Hearts Club.’
