Marcus Dobre

In 1991, Aurelia Dobre emigrated from her native country Romania to America where she started working as a choreographer and dance coach. By 1992, she had met and married Boz Mofid, a former member of the Iranian gymnastics team, and the owner of a gym. Marcus and Lucas were born on January 28, 1999 in Gaithersburg, a city in Montgomery County in the state of Maryland, USA. Beside Lucas, Marcus has two elder brothers, Cyrus and Darius. Cyrus is a social media celebrity in his own right, with over 300K followers on Musical.ly and 230K followers on Instagram, while Darius is currently enrolled in Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. Marcus loves spending time with his family. He is an excellent swimmer and an avid movie watcher with ‘The Avengers’ being his all-time favourite film. He and his brother attended South Hagerstown High School.

The Dobre brothers are professional dancers. Performing since their childhood, they have been trained by their mother Aurelia Dobre, who is a former artistic gymnast, world champion, and silver medal winner at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Marcus and his brother started on Vine with the account ‘Twinbotz’. They didn’t receive the recognition they were hoping for at first. They considered quitting as it was also becoming quite time-consuming. They decided to keep at it for a while longer, and within a few months things started to change for the better as their old uploads started to become popular. This was when they met Paul, who was a successful Viner at the time. In September 2014, the brothers created a video which was dedicated to fellow Viners Lycia Faith and SelfieC. This video brought considerable fame to the twin boys’ account.

The boys had created their YouTube channel all the way back in 2011, but began posting content on it only in October 2015. Their first video is a ‘What are the odds’ challenge video guest-starring Paul. The video of putting 5000 marshmallows into a pool and swimming in it is the most popular upload on their channel, with 8.5 million views. Another time they put 1000 bananas in the pool and the video of that has received 7.9 million views so far. Marcus and Lucas also have a musical.ly account, ‘dobretwins’, which has amassed 5.58 million fans, 267.2 million hearts, and 1,063 emoji-love. In 2017, they came out with their merchandise. They have hoodies, caps, beanies, and phone cases.

In a world where any teenager with a camera can potentially become a star, it is quite refreshing to find someone like Marcus, who has a natural talent in the classical sense, and enough grit and determination to transform that talent into a career-building skill. While many of Marcus and his brother’s uploads across social media platforms involve various challenges, pranks, and Q&As, their rise to international fame came through videos of their impeccable dance routines. The styles they excel in are hip hop and contemporary. They often dance in public places, in grocery stores, malls, plazas, and even airports, drawing in live audience!

Marcus’ favourite colour is light blue. His favourite animal is panda, and favourite fruit is banana.
