Malcolm McDowell was earlier married to actress/publicist Margot Bennett from 21 April 1975 to 15 September 1980. Hardly a few days after divorcing her, he went on to marry actress Mary Steenburgen. The couple had two children, Lilly Amanda and Charles Malcolm, before divorcing in 1990.
Currently, the English actor is married to Kelley Kuhr, who is 24 years younger than him. The couple has three sons: Beckett Taylor, Finnian Anderson, and Seamus Hudson. McDowell currently lives in Santa Barbara, California.
McDowell is the maternal uncle of British-Sudanese actor Alexander Siddig, with whom he appeared in the film ‘Doomsday’ (2008).
Malcolm McDowell was born as Malcolm John Taylor on 13 June 1943 in Horsforth, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. His father Charles Taylor was a publican while his father Edna worked as an hotelier. He was raised alongside his two sisters Gloria and Judy.
McDowell relocated to Bridlington after his father was stationed there. At the age of 11, he was sent to the Tunbridge Boarding School and later attended the Cannock House School in Eltham, Kent. As a school boy he realized his passion for acting.
He enrolled at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) to study acting professionally. Meanwhile, McDowell also worked in his father pub as well as in a nut factory. After the pub went bankrupt, he did numerous odd jobs to support his family.
Malcolm McDowell made his film debut as Mick Travis in Lindsay Anderson’s ‘If…’ that was released in 1968. He then appeared in the films ‘Figures in a Landscape’, ‘The Raging Moon’ and ‘A Clockwork Orange’ in the early 1970s. He reprised his role as Mick Travis in ‘O Lucky Man’ and then third film in the trilogy titled ‘Britannia Hospital’.
During the 1970s, the actor also performed on stage in plays including ‘The Collection’. In 1975, he starred in the French war flick ‘Aces High’. The following year, he did the movie ‘Voyage of the Damned’.
He got featured in the films ‘She Fell Among Thieves’ and ‘Caligula’ in 1978 and 1979 respectively. In 1979, McDowell also landed in Hollywood and made his debut as H. G. Wells in the movie ‘Time After Time’.
He starred as F.E. Cochrane in the action flick ‘Blue Thunder’ in 1983. The same year, he played Reggie Wanker in ‘Get Crazy’ and also appeared as Wolf in Faerie Tale Theatre's rendition of the "Little Red Riding Hood".
The English actor narrated a documentary titled ‘The Compleat Beatles’ in 1984. In 1985, he did the TV movies ‘Arthur the King’ and ‘Gulag’. A year later, he appeared as Christopher Quinn in the TV film ‘Monte Carlo’. After this, he was cast in the movies ‘The Caller’, ‘Buy & Cell’, ‘Sunset’ and ‘Mortacci’.
In 1992, Malcolm McDowell appeared as himself in the satirical black comedy movie ‘The Player’. In this movie directed by Robert Altman, the actor chastises the protagonist Griffin Mill for badmouthing him behind his back. The film also starred artistes like Tim Robbins, Fred Ward, and Greta Scacchi.
In 2013, the English actor appeared as the title character in the thriller flick ‘The Employer’. In this movie, McDowell interviews five candidates for a post at a mysterious, powerful corporation. His performance in the flick earned him the Best Actor award at the Los Angeles Movie Awards. The film too went on to receive the Best Thriller award at the Illinois International Film Festival.
