SM Entertainment’s original plan was to introduce him as a member of the boy band ‘Smile’, which also included his future bandmate Donghae. Meant to be a rival of TVXQ, the group also had three other members. However, the plan was eventually scrapped and both Park and Donghae were then put together with ten other boys in the rotational group, Super Junior’05.

In 2006, when SM Entertainment started the initiative to recruit new members for the group, the rotational system faced strong opposition from the fans and the talent agency eventually relented. When the 13th member of the group Kyuhyun joined, they dropped the suffix ‘05’ and officially became Super Junior.
