Spencer was born in New York, on 19th June 1969 to Richard von Seelen and Carolyn von Seelen. She studied at Garden City High School, and later at Pennsylvania State University, from where she graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism.
She married David Haffenreffer in 2000 and had two children with him. However, in 2015, the couple divorced after 15 years of marriage.
After completing her studies, Lara Spencer joined the NBC page program, where she worked with other reporters in order to gain experience. Soon she managed to earn a position at the channel WDEF-TV. She not only worked as a reporter, but also had to do the work of a producer, editor, cameraman and even a news-van driver. A few years later, she also started anchoring the 3 AM news for the channel WABC-TV. She came to the limelight after she joined ABC network’s morning show ‘Good Morning America’ as a national correspondent.
The show, which had started running in November 1975, is one of the longest running and most popular morning programs in the US. It was created by Donald Perris and William F. Baker. The show has won several awards including multiple Emmys. Soon, she was promoted to a co-host of the show, which catapulted her to new heights of national popularity.
She also hosted the 2004 and 2005 seasons of the American TV program ‘Antiques Roadshow’. The show, which has been airing since 1997, has gained a lot of popularity. It has been nominated for the Emmy fourteen times. The series features owners of antiques bringing in items to experts who talk about its history and value.
She created and served as a co-producer of ‘It’s Worth What?’, a game show focusing on the cost and value of items. It aired in 2011, from June to September, covering only one season.
The following year, she wrote and published her first book ‘I Brake for Yard Sales’. It was a guide on creating high-end looking rooms with just second hand finds. It was released in April 2012. After two years, she published her second book ‘Flea Market Fabulous: Designing Gorgeous Rooms with Vintage Treasures’. It was a guide on designing rooms and homes.
