Scodelario was born as Kaya Rose Humphrey in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, in England, on 13 March 1992. Her parents divorced when she was still very young. She was, therefore, raised by her mother, whose surname she eventually adopted.

Though Kaya Scodelario had no prior training or experience in acting, she was cast in the first season of ‘Skins’ in the role of Effy Stonem in 2007. Though initially she had minimal speaking lines, the significance of her character grew as the series developed. Though the series earned positive reviews from the critics, it also kindled considerable controversy because of its depiction of teen sexuality.

She made her film debut with a supporting role in the sci-fi film ‘Moon’ in 2009. Directed by Duncan Jones, the film earned nearly twice its budget. The film won many awards and was also nominated for BAFTA Awards in the category of ‘Best British Film’.

She was next seen in the 2010 fantasy film ‘Clash of the Titans’. The film was based on the Greek myth of Perseus. Though the movie performed well financially, it was met with negative reviews from the critics.

She appeared in the British action movie ‘Shank’. The film was met with negative reviews. Her next film, ‘Wuthering Heights,’ was also a huge commercial disaster. However, it won several awards and received mixed to favorable reviews. The news website Salon placed it on the top of their list of the ‘Best Movies of 2012’. She next appeared in the teen drama film ‘Now is Good’, the Comedy film ‘Spike,’ and the thriller film ‘Twenty8k’.

In 2013, she played an important role in the drama thriller film ‘The Truth about Emanuel’. Written, directed, and produced by Francesca Gregorini, the film won multiple awards, though it didn’t fare well financially. Along with the rest of the cast, Scodelario won the ‘Ashland Independent Film Award’ for her performance in the category of ‘Best Ensemble’. The same year, she also appeared in the short film ‘Walking Stories’. The next year, she was seen in the thriller film ‘Tiger House’.

Kaya Scodelario made her film debut in ‘Moon,’ a 2009 sci-fi film which was written by Duncan Jones. It was about a man living on the far side of the moon who experiences a personal crisis. Other actors in the film were Sam Rockwell, Robin Chalk, Dominique McElligott, Benedict Wong and Matt Berry. Made on a budget of $5 million, the film earned almost twice its budget. It also won numerous awards including one BAFTA Award and a British Independent Film Award.

Scodelario gained popularity for her main role in the dystopian film ‘The Maze Runner’. Directed by Wes Ball, it was based on the novel of the same by James Dashner. The film follows the story of a teenage boy who awakens in a maze with no idea of who he is. The film did well commercially, earning more than ten times its budget, and also won multiple awards. It was met with average reviews.

She played a supporting role in the 2017 swashbuckler fantasy film ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’. Directed by Joachim Ronning, the film was the fifth installment of the famous film series ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’. The film starred actors Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush and Brenton Thwaites. It was met with mostly mixed reviews from critics.
