She was dating Stephen Tredre for four-and-a-half years before he passed away due to bone cancer. His death coincided with the premiere of ‘Titanic’, for which she could not be present as she attended his funeral.
She married Jim Thereapleton in 1998, with whom she has a daughter, Mia. The duo divorced in 2001.
She married director, Sam Mendes in 2003 with whom she had a son and separated from him in 2010.
Kate Elizabeth Winslet was the second of the four children born to Sally Anne and Roger John Winslet.
She started studying drama at the age of 11 at the Redroofs Theatre School, where she was also made the head-girl. She appeared in her first television advertisement for ‘Sugar Puffs’ at the age of 12.
In 1988, she made her first appearance in the TV series, ‘Shrinks’. Three years later, she dropped out of school to pursue her new acting career. She soon began appearing in theater productions such as ‘Adrian Mole’, ‘Peter Pan’ and the sitcom, ‘Get Back’.
She landed her debut role in a feature film titled, ‘Heavenly Creatures’, in 1994, which was directed by Peter Jackson. She then attracted even more praise for her acting skills when she starred in ‘Sense and Sensibility’, which was released in the next year.
In 1996, she was seen in the movies ‘Jude’ and ‘Hamlet’. Although the movies didn't succeed at the box-office, her performances were critically-acclaimed.
In 1997, she was seen in one of her most memorable performances till date as the upper-class socialite passenger on the ill-fated RMS Titanic, in the movie ‘Titanic’. She was nominated for a number of high-profile awards for her role and eventually went on to earn a number of honors for her acting.
In 1998, she was seen in the low-budget film, ‘Hippie’, which she had started filming before ‘Titanic’. The next year, she was seen in ‘Holy Smoke!’, which was another low-budget venture.
She was cast in ‘Quills’ opposite Geoffrey Rush, which was released in 2000. This period drama was inspired by the life and works of Marquis de Sade. The art house film went on to be glorified by the critics. The next year, she appeared as a World War II code-breaker in ‘Enigma’.
In 2001, she also lent her voice for the character of ‘Belle’ in the animated film, ‘Christmas Carol: The Movie’. She also recorded a hit single which was used in the movie titled, ‘What If’. Two years later, she starred in ‘The Life of David Gale’.
In 1997, she was cast as ‘Rose DeWitt Bukater’, a 17-year old first-class passenger on the RMS Titanic in James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’. She plays the love interest of Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack Dawson) in the film, who is a third-class passenger. The movie is considered to be one of her biggest commercial successes till date.
She was cast in ‘The Reader’, which was released in 2008. She played the role of ‘Hannah Schmitz’, a woman who was going through a war trial, hiding a horrendous Nazi past and her scandalous affair with a younger boy. This role is considered one of her most critically successful roles till date for which she earned an ‘Academy Award for Best Actress’.
