John Oliver has been married to Kate Norley since 2011. She is an Iraq War veteran who had served as a US Army medic. They met at the Republican National Convention in 2008. They have one son, who was born prematurely in 2015. The family resides in New York City.
John William Oliver was born on 23rd April 1977, in Erdington, West Midlands, England, to Carole and Jim Oliver. His father was a school headmaster and a social worker, while his mother was a music teacher.
After completing his schooling, he studied at Christ’s University, Cambridge. During his time there, he was also a member of Cambridge Footlights, a famous theatrical club run by the students of the Cambridge University. He graduated in 1998, with a degree in English literature.
After finishing his college education, John Oliver continued to write as well as perform standup comedy all over England. He first performed at the Edinburg Festival Fringe as a part of The Comedy Zone.
In 2002, he performed his debut solo show. Later, he co-hosted the radio show ‘Political Animal’ and appeared in the satirical news show ‘Mock the Week’ as a panelist.
In 2006, his work was noticed by the British comedian Ricky Gervais. Gervais recommended Oliver to his friend Jon Stewart, after which Oliver was called to audition for ‘The Daily Show with John Stewart’.
He was eventually selected to be the British correspondent on ‘The Daily Show with John Stewart’. His work on the show earned him a lot of popularity and he received several Emmy Awards and nominations.
From 2007 to 2015, he also co-hosted the satirical comedy podcast named ‘The Bugle’ with Andy Zaltzman.’ From 2010 to 2013, he hosted the comedy show ‘John Oliver’s New York Stand-up Show’.
John Oliver made his acting debut with a guest role in the TV series ‘Bleak House’ in 1985. He was next seen in other TV shows such as ‘People Like Us’, ‘Hero’ and ‘Green Mile’. From 2009 to 2014, he was seen in the TV series ‘Community’ in a recurring role. His other works include voice roles in the TV series ‘Rick and Morty’ and ‘Danger Mouse’.
Oliver made his big screen debut with a supporting role in the 2008 American romantic comedy film ‘The Love Guru’. The film did poorly commercially, and its critical reception was also hugely negative. In 2011, he was seen in a short film named ‘Moves: The Rise and Rise of the New Pornographers’.
In 2011, he had a supporting voice role in the animated comedy film ‘The Smurfs’. Made on a budget of $110 million, the film turned out to be a huge financial success, earning more than $560 million. It was met with mostly average reviews. A sequel, titled ‘The Smurfs 2’, was released in 2013 where Oliver reprised his role.
