Joel Kinnaman was born as Charles Joel Nordström Kinnaman on 25 November 1979 in Stockholm, Sweden to Bitte and Steve Kinnaman. His mother is a Swedish therapist and his father is an American military man. Kinnaman has five sisters including actress Melinda Kinnaman.
Coming to his love life, the actor dated Olivia Munn in 2012. The duo separated two years later. Soon after, Kinnaman began dating tattoo artist Cleo Wattenström and married her in 2016.
Joel Kinnaman started his acting career as a child artist in 1990, with a role in the Swedish opera ‘Storstad’. After the opera ended, he stepped away from acting. In 2002, he restarted his acting career, enrolling in the Malmö Theatre Academy. During his time there, Kinnaman featured in numerous movies, such as ‘Hannah med H’, 'Storm', 'Tjenare kungen' and ‘God Save the King.’ Following his graduation in 2007, he appeared in a stage adaption of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel ‘Crime and Punishment’. After this, the actor got featured as Gustav in the TV series ‘Andra Avenyn’.
He starred in the flick ‘In Your Veins’ in 2009. The same year, he played Frank Wagner in six films of the ‘Johan Falk’ movie series. Kinnaman was cast as Johan "JW" Westlund in the Swedish thriller film ‘Easy Money’ in 2010 and went on to become an international star with his performance. In the year 2011, he appeared in the thriller ‘The Darkest Hour’. That year, he also began playing the role of Detective Stephen Holder in the television series ‘The Killing’.
The actor starred in the movies ‘Safe House’ and ‘Lola Versus’ in 2012. He then reprised his role as Johan "JW" Westlund in ‘Easy Money II: Hard to Kill’ in 2012 and ‘Easy Money III: Life Deluxe’ in 2013. The following year, he did the superhero action flick ‘RoboCop’. Kinnaman was then featured in the films ‘Knight of Cups’, ‘Child 44’ and ‘Run All Night’ in 2015. From 2016 to 2017, he played Governor Will Conway in ‘House of Cards’. During this time, he also had roles in the movies ‘Suicide Squad’ and ‘Edge of Winter’. In 2018, the actor was cast in the lead role of Takeshi Kovacs in the drama ‘Altered Carbon’.
