Joel was in a relationship with American actor Katherine McNamara in 2012.
The couple broke up after a while. Joel remained single for a long time after his break-up.
He started dating performer Isabelle Fuhrman in 2014. Not much is known about his current relationship status.
Joel Courtney was born on January 31, 1996, in Monterey, California. He is the youngest child of Dale and Carla Courtney.
His parents are both school teachers. Joel has three siblings: two elder brothers, Caleb and Josh, and one elder sister, Chantelle.
Joel was always interested in acting and had acted in a few school plays, too. He attended a few training programs in acting but had never received any significant professional training.
While living in Moscow, Idaho, he flew to Los Angeles. It was the first week of his summer school break in 2010. While he went there to spend some time with his elder brother, Caleb, Joel also hoped to get a chance to work in a commercial and earn $100 before leaving the city.
His brother was already taking acting classes, and it was his acting coach who suggested that Joel audition for J J Abrams’s film ‘Super 8.’ It was Joey’s first audition.
While he was busy with auditions, Joel got an opportunity to work in the TV series ‘R. L. Stine's The Haunting Hour.’ He played ‘John Westmore’ in two episodes of the second season of the show.
Joel only wished to work in a TV commercial. However, he bagged the lead role in his first audition. After 11 callbacks, his role in ‘Super 8’ was confirmed.
The film featured him as ‘Joe Lamb.’ It also starred Elle Fanning and Kyle Chandler in main roles.
It grossed over $260 million against a budget of $50 million. It was both critically and commercially successful.
Joel’s work in the film was highly praised by critics. In 2012, he appeared as young ‘Tony’ in the film ‘Spare Time Killers’ and as ‘Griffin Jones’ in the TV film ‘Rogue.’
Joel won the ‘Saturn Award’ for the ‘Best Performance by a Young Actor’ for ‘Super 8’ in 2012. He has also been nominated for the ‘Teen Choice Award,’ the ‘Young Artist Award,’ the ‘BAM Award,’ and the ‘Coming of Age Award’ for the same role.
