Jessie T Usher Jr. was born on February 29, 1992, in Silver Springs, Maryland, US, to Judith and Jessie T Usher. He is a rare leap-year child. He has a sister named Jesstia Usher who appeared in TV commercials and inspired him to join the entertainment industry. He is of African–American ethnicity.
He was introduced to acting at the age of 5, when he was featured in a commercial for the meat and cold-cut production company ‘Oscar Mayer.’ His parents encouraged him to take up acting as a career and relocated to Los Angeles in 2003 to facilitate the same. He guest-starred in several TV series as a child, and that helped him hone his skills. His sister studied design and became a well-known fashion designer.
Jessie excelled in academics since his elementary school. He graduated from high school as the salutatorian of his class at the age of 15. He then studied culinary arts in college and earned the honor of being a member of the ‘Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society.’ However, he wished to make a career in the entertainment industry. In 2005, he appeared in an episode of the ‘CBS’ police drama ‘Without a Trace’ while he was still in high school. This marked his entry into the world of entertainment.
After completing high school, he appeared in an episode of the ‘Disney Channel’ comedy TV series ‘Hannah Montana’ in 2007. This was closely followed by his appearance as ‘Baby G’ and a robber in the drama series ‘Lincoln Heights’ and ‘Numb3rs,’ respectively, in 2008.
He played minor roles in the TV series ‘The Mentalist’ and ‘Criminal Minds’ in 2009. He also appeared in ‘Summer Camp’ and ‘G.I. Joe: Renegades’ in 2010. He appeared as a basketball player in the movie ‘Beautiful Boy’ in 2010.
His performance received positive reviews and helped him bag the role of ‘Lyle’ in the ‘Cartoon Network’ TV film ‘Level Up’ in 2011. This was his first starring role. The film inspired a spin-off TV series that featured Usher in the recurring role of ‘Lyle Hugginson’ for two seasons.
He continued to appear in films related to sports, such as ‘When the Game Stands Tall’ and ‘All Part of the Game: Part 1 Freethrows,’ till he appeared as ‘Dylan Hiller’ in the ‘20th Century Fox’ science-fiction disaster film ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ in 2016.
He received a big break on TV with the lead role of ‘Cam Calloway,’ a professional basketball player, in the sitcom ‘Survivor’s Remorse.’ The series ran from 2014 to 2017 and made him a household name in the US.
