From January 2009 to August 2009, she worked as a human resource coordinator with the 'Oilinvest Group,’ also known as ‘Tamoil,’ a European energy provider. Jelena founded 'Jelena Ristic Consulting' in July 2011 and now serves as the director of the firm. This Monaco-based firm provides services related to digital marketing and brand development. She is the founder and the executive director of 'Original,’ a magazine that publishes content about the lives and works of celebrities across the globe. From August 2011 to September 2015, Jelena was the global CEO of the 'Novak Djokovic Foundation.' Founded by her husband in 2017, the foundation strives to provide education and basic amenities to underprivileged children. Jelena now serves as the national director of this charitable foundation.

In May 2014, Jelena was given an award for her philanthropic work and her effort in upgrading the lives of underprivileged children in Serbia. She also had a brief stint as a model. Jelena appeared as a swimwear model for the 2013 swimwear collection of 'Figleaves,' a UK-based online lingerie retailer. In 2016, she was one of the guest speakers at the first 'Western Balkans Women Conference.' Jelena delivered an inspiring speech on the role of women in the peace-building process in the Western Balkans.

Jelena met Novak for the first time in high school, but they officially began dating in 2005. She is a year older than Novak. Their romance bloomed over the next few years. However, after Jelena bagged a job in an oil company in Monte Carlo, their relationship faced a lot of struggle. Her job and Novak’s tennis tournaments kept them away from each other for long periods of time. They also contemplated breaking up once. However, their love for each other won eventually.

During one of his tours in Monte Carlo, Novak took her by a helicopter to the 'Couvent des Minimes' hotel in Provence, France, and proposed to her. They got engaged in September 2013, and on April 24, 2014, they announced Jelena’s pregnancy. They got married on July 10, 2014. The wedding ceremony was held at 'Sveti Stefan,' a hotel resort in Montenegro. A day later, Jelena and Novak had a church wedding at the 'Church of Saint Stephen,' which belongs to 'Praskvica Monastery.'
