George Coe

George Coe was born in a middle-class neighborhood named Jamaica in the New York City borough of Queens on May 10, 1929. He was married thrice in his life. His first marriage was with Nancy Baker and the second with Karen Foray; both ended in divorce. His last marriage was with Susan Allsopp Massaron, with whom he had two children. Coe died in Santa Monica on July 18, 2015 after a long illness.

George Coe started his acting career in theaters. He made a name for himself on the Broadway way before he joined the lucrative television and film industries. Coe appeared alongside Angela Lansbury in the production of ‘Mame’ and later became part of ‘On the Twentieth Century’ as ‘Owen O'Malley’ and of ‘Company’ as ‘David’. He then joined the television industry and became part of the ‘Not Ready For Prime Time Players’ group consisting of all the cast members (a total of 150) of ‘Saturday Night Live’. Interestingly, Coe was credited as a cast member only for the first show even though he was part of numerous other episodes without any credit.

During his time with ‘Saturday Night Live’, Coe also appeared in some award-winning short films in the late 1960s and 1970s. He was part of the critically acclaimed short film ‘De Düva: The Dove’ (1968), a humorous take (parodies) of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman’s films. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role of ‘Viktor’ in the short film. He was again featured in a critically acclaimed short film titled ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’ (1979). It was based on the American family courtroom drama film of the same title, which tells the story of a couple’s divorce and the ordeal surrounding the affair. Coe played the character played by Dustin Hoffman in the original film. The short film won an Academy Award and Coe was praised for his stellar performance.

He then appeared in the American action-adventure-thriller film ‘Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins’ as ‘Brigadier General Scott Watson’. In 1991, Coe was featured in the 15th episode of the fourth season of the American science fiction television series ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ in a guest role.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Coe appeared in several popular television shows, albeit in smaller or guest roles. His popular works include ‘Simon & Simon’, ‘L.A. Law’, ‘Uncle Tom's Cabin’, ‘Max Headroom’, ‘Thirtysomething’, ‘Law & Order’, ‘The Cosby Mysteries’, and ‘New York Undercover’. In the next decades, he appeared in notable roles in television shows like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, ‘Judging Amy’, ‘Numb3rs’, ‘Celebrity Deathmatch’, ‘Supernatural’, ‘Grey's Anatomy’, and ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’. In 2009, Coe was approached to voice the character of ‘Woodhouse’ in the American adult animated sitcom ‘Archer’. The character became very popular and the audience loved the unique way of his dialogue delivery.

Coe has worked in several popular video games as a voice artist. Some of his popular works are ‘Reservoir Dogs’, ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’, ‘Star Wars: The Old Republic’, and ‘Star Wars: Rise of the Hutt Cartel’.
