Gary Brolsma was born on January 14, 1986 in New Jersey. He graduated from Bergen County Technical High School in 2004. He became interested in music as a teenager and used to sing with a band called ‘The Nonetheless.’ Currently he is working as a web designer and musician.
Gary Brolsma had recently graduated from high school and was getting bored at home when he decided to make a silly video in order to entertain his friends. Little did he know at that time that the video would actually become an internet phenomenon! In December 2004, he posted a video titled ‘Numa Numa Dance’ to a website called Newgrounds.com. It was a cover video of the song ‘Dragostea Din Tei’ which showed Gary lip-syncing to the lyrics and making weird dance moves. Utterly hilarious, the video soon went viral—it gained over two million views within three months of its release! Over the next couple of years, it became even more popular and by September 2006, it had hit over 15 million views on Newgrounds.com alone and had been shared numerous times on other websites as well. Eventually the video set a Guinness World Record with over 700 million views.
The unexpected success of the video made Gary Brolsma an internet celebrity and he was often featured in mainstream media. He was interviewed by magazines and other publications, and also made television appearances on ABC's ‘Good Morning America,’ NBC's ‘The Tonight Show,’ and VH1's ‘Best Week Ever.’ In 2007, Brolsma cashed in on his popularity by collaborating with Glenn Rubenstein, Aaron Yonda, and Matt Sloan to make a video as a part of Canon's ‘Battle of the Internet Superstars.’
Already a budding musician when he became internationally famous as the ‘Numa Numa’ guy, he released his first album, titled ‘Weird Tempo’ in 2008. The following year, he appeared in an advertisement for Geico and starred in a 2010 Super Bowl television commercial for Vizio. In 2014, Brolsma uploaded a video titled ‘Numa Numa 10-Year Reunion’ which featured him lip-syncing to several popular songs.
