Drew Grant was born in Park Slope, a residential neighbourhood in north-west Brooklyn, New York City. Little is known about her early life and childhood. When she was young, she moved to the state of Delaware with her family. She grew up there and after graduating from high school, enrolled at Oberlin College, a liberal arts college in Oberlin, Ohio. In 2006, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English language and literature.

Grant met fellow journalist Ari Melber at a social event in 2010. After dating for three years, Ari proposed to Grant. She accepted and they were married sometime in 2014. Melber steadily rose through the ranks in his professional career and became the host of MSNBC's ‘The Beat with Ari Melber’ in July 2017. The couple eventually divorced in 2017. The relationship did not produce any children.

After graduating from Oberlin College in 2006, Drew Grant joined the workforce in the following year as a pop culture editorial assistant at 236.com, a sister site of Huffington Post. She worked there for one year and four months before joining Jossip Initiatives, a web publisher that puts out blogs, as an editor. She was employed there for ten months, from August 2008 to May 2009. From April 2009, she began blogging at Nerve, a digital communications company that concentrates on strategy, creativity and technology with the aim of teaching the audiences how to be more engaged, informed, inspired and empowered to take action.

Grant joined Crushable.com as a staff writer at about the same time she started blogging for Nerve. Crushable used to be an online news outlet that exclusively reported on pop culture but later changed its name to Alloy and became an online magazine for women.

After working there until February 2011, for nearly two years, Grant joined Salon Media Group as a pop culture writer. Founded by David Talbot in 1995, Salon is an American news and opinion website with politically progressive, liberal editorial stance. Grant worked at the company’s New York office. She worked for Salon for seven months and subsequently joined the New York Observer as a staff writer in September that year.
