The Adoption Story

Mindy opted for an intrauterine device (IUD), after her fourth daughter was born. A few months later, she got it removed because she wanted to conceive again. Unfortunately, her body reacted to the IUD, and that reduced her chances of getting pregnant. Even after a lot of medical help and treatment, the chances did not improve. In the end, the couple settled for adoption. They wanted to contribute to society by giving a child a better life. They lived in Missouri at that time.

The Adoption Story

After a lot of research, the McKnight couple decided to adopt a child from Utah. Since they already had four daughters, they decided to adopt a boy. Having lived in Missouri, the couple felt the need to show some love and support to African–American children. They believed that adopting an African–American child would bring them closer to their race and community. They felt they would then be able to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the ‘Black History Month’ in a completely new way.

The Adoption Story

They chose a mother from Utah from the list of choices provided by their adoption agency. The lady was a poor teen single-mother from an extremely underprivileged area of Louisiana and had already had children before. The adoption rights were signed after 30 hours of the child’s birth. McKnight had already thought of naming the child “Daxton.” A couple of days after his birth, Daxton was welcomed to the McKnight family. A grand party was thrown in honor of the newborn. Daxton’s adoption was legally finalized six months later.

The Adoption Story

When Daxton was an infant, he would not respond to normal stimuli. When he turned five, his parents found out he was hyposensitive autistic. They tried several types of medical therapies, such as the implementation of a multi-sensory environment. A few years later, he finally showed significant improvement. However, Daxton was not completely cured. Daxton was expelled from his kindergarten within a couple of months of his enrollment. He was expelled because he was an autistic child. Daxton also suffers from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
