CL was born as Lee Chae-rin on February 26, 1991 in Seoul, South Korea. In her childhood, she moved frequently with her family due to her father's job. CL spent much of her early days in the USA, Japan, and France. The details regarding her family background, parents’ names, education, and dating life is not known to the media. As of now, the South Korean singer is active on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. Lee Chae-rin gave her first singing audition when she was 15. She was then featured on Big Bang's "Intro” in 2007. The same year, she performed for the very first time on stage. She then gave her first credited performance by rapping Uhm Jung-hwa's "DJ” in 2008.
A year later, she took the stage name CL and became the lead rapper of the girl group 2NE1 alongside Minzy, Sandara Park and Bom. The group collaborated with the band Big Bang for the track "Lollipop.” Next, they released their single "I Don't Care" for their first EP titled ‘2NE1’. This song became a huge success and was placed in many charts.
In August 2009, CL teamed up with Teddy Park and G-Dragon for the song "The Leaders". Soon after this she collaborated with Minzy for the single "Please Don't Go”. Then on 28 May 2013, she released her first solo single titled "The Baddest Female". Next, she co-composed and wrote the tracks "Crush", "Baby I Miss You" and “If I Were You" for 2NE1's second album ‘Crush’. The album was released in March 2014. More recently, she performed at the 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony at Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium in February 2018.
