Bennett actively promotes the #SaveChicago campaign. The campaign is basically initiated to stop brutality and combat gun violence. Chance the Rapper was born as Chancelor Johnathan Bennett on April 16, 1993 in West Chatham, Chicago, to Ken Williams Bennett. His father, once an aide to former Chicago mayor and Senator, today serves as the deputy chief to Mayor Rahm Emanuel. He has a younger brother, Taylor Bennett, who is a rapper too.
Bennett attained his education from Jones College Prep High School. It was during his freshman year that he formed a hip hop duo ‘Instrumentality’ with a friend. His earliest performances came in at YOUmedia Lyricist Loft at Harold Washington Library.
Despite being ridiculed by his teachers, Bennett’s passion to become a musician did not dampen. Instead he pursued his ambition with full force and recorded his first mixtape ‘10 Day’, in early 2011. He ended the year by releasing a song ‘Windows’.
In April 2012, Bennett released his mixtape to overwhelming response. The mixtape was commercially successful and critically lauded. Ever since its release, it has been downloaded over 300,000 times via Datpiff. The mixtape was featured in Forbes magazine’s publication ‘Cheap Tunes’ column.
After a stint with American rapper Childish Gambino in the latter’s mixtape ‘Royalty’, Bennett released his second mixtape ‘Acid Rap’ in April 2013. Downloaded over 1 million times, the mixtape was strongly praised by music critics and fans alike. It even gained the nomination for Best Mixtape at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards.
‘Acid Rap’ debuted at number 63 on Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. It also made it to the list of 50 Best Albums of 2013 and attained the 26th spot on Rolling Stones, 12th on Pitchfork's list and was ranked 4th by Complex. It was also listed as one of NPR Music's 50 Favorite Albums Of 2013.
In May 2013, he released the single ‘Paranoia’ for ‘Songs from Scratch’ series. Next he was featured as an artist on Childish Gambino's album ‘Because the Internet’, releasing on December 6, 2013.
Though early in his career still, Chance the Rapper’s best bit as a hip hop artist and musician has come from his third mixtape, ‘Coloring Book’. Debuting at number 8 on Billboard 200, it became the first release to chart solely on streams. The mixtape was widely lauded by the critics and went on to receive three Grammy nominations including Best Rap Album. It also became the debut streaming-only album ever to receive a Grammy nomination.
