William Oliver Campbell, better known as Billy Campbell, was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on July 7, 1959. He endured a very tough childhood as his parents got divorced when he was just two years old. He went to Fork Union Military Academy and later attended Western Albemarle High School to complete his studies. During his early years, Billy developed a knack for acting and was also very active in sports. As a passionate rugby player, he played for the UVA Rugby Football Club and later joined the Chicago Lions RFC, as well as the Santa Monica Rugby Club.
He met actress Jennifer Connelly at the sets of ‘The Rocketeer’ in 1991 and after the shooting was done, they started dating. The couple was in a relationship for almost five years before they called it quits in 1996. Billy currently resides in his apartment in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Billy Campbell’s acting career started when he appeared as ‘Strickner’ in the 1982 Vietnam War film ‘How Sleep the Brave’. He made his television debut with a guest role in the American sitcom ‘Family Ties’ in 1984. He got his first big break the same year when he was signed to play the character of ‘Luke Fuller’, the gay love interest of the character played by Steven Carrington in the ABC prime time soap opera ‘Dynasty’. He earned a lot of praise for playing such a challenging role so early in his career.
In the ensuing years, he appeared in several television shows as well as films including ‘First Steps’ in 1985, ‘Dream West’ in 1986, ‘Crime Story’ in 1986, ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ in 1988, and ‘Call from Space’ in 1989. In 1991, Billy appeared in the American period superhero adventure film ‘The Rocketeer’ by Walt Disney Pictures. He appeared alongside Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton, and Paul Sorvino, playing the character of ‘Cliff Secord, his first lead role in a film.
A year later, he appeared in ‘Bram Stoker's Dracula’, an American gothic horror film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The movie also starred Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, and Keanu Reeves besides Billy Campbell. Billy appeared as ‘Walter Tatum’, one of the lead characters in ‘Moon Over Miami’, an American crime drama television series, in 1993. After making several appearances in different television films and shows for the next six years, he landed another lead role in ‘Once and Again’, portraying the character of ‘Rick Sammler’ between 1999 and 2002.
He also appeared in the science fiction television series ‘The 4400’ alongside Joel Gretsch and Jacqueline McKenzie. In 2011, he was picked to play the role of ‘Darren Richmond’ in the American crime drama television series ‘The Killing’, which was based on the Danish television series ‘Forbrydelsen’. Apart from making a name for himself in the television industry, Billy Campbell is also active in films and has appeared in movies like ‘Enough’, ‘Ghost Town’, ‘Copperhead’, and ‘The Scribbler.’
