He is also the deputy president of the PKR political party that he co-founded. He holds a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Mathematics and Economics. He entered the political arena in 1987 as Special Officer to Anwar Ibrahim, the then Minister of Education. He later served as private secretary to Ibrahim when he became the deputy Prime Minister. Azmin remained close to Anwar even after his sacking in 1998 and later founded the opposition Keadilan ('Justice') party with Anwar, which later became the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR, the 'People's Justice Party'). He was barred from participating in 2004 general elections after his conviction for lying in court during a corruption trial against Anwar. He was later acquitted of the charge and went on to win several elections
