Armin Shimerman was born on 5th November 1949 in Lakewood Township, New Jersey to Jewish immigrant parents, Herbert Shimerman and Susan Shimerman. While his father Herbert earned his livelihood painting homes, his mother Susan worked as an accountant. At the age of 15, he, along with his family shifted to Los Angeles.

After shifting to Los Angeles, Armin was put in a drama institution by his mother so that he could develop his own social network. He attended Santa Monica High School and was an active member of the school’s band, playing the trumpet. He completed his graduation from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Armin Shimerman was selected to be an apprentice at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, CA; he was one amongst the eight who were finally picked out of around 900 applicants. He garnered thespian experience as a trainee, doing bit roles in a string of local theatrical productions.

However, he was aware that in order to become a highly sought after stage artist, he’d have to shift to New York City which was the perfect breeding ground for budding theater actors. So, after gaining some professional experience in Old Globe Theater, he finally made the move to Broadway.

Armin’s innate talent coupled with his acquired dramatic skills meant that he did not have to wait inordinately long to find roles in Broadway productions. He was chosen to be a member of the ensemble cast for the Broadway musical ‘Threepenny Opera,’ debuting as a substitute.

Roy Brocksmith, who later on co-starred with him in ‘Peak Performance’—an episode of the Star Trek’s ‘Next Generation’ Series—also was a member of the ‘Threepenny Opera’s cast. The musical drama was staged 306 times from 1st May 1976 to 23rd January 1977.

The most notable amongst these series include ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ (1987, 1989, 1994), ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’ (1993-1999), and the ‘Star Trek: Voyager’ (1995). His preferred episode was Deep Space Nine’s ‘Little Green Men’ where he steered a spaceship as its captain.
