Alexis Jordan was born on April 7, 1992 in Columbia, South Carolina. She is of mixed descent. She has three younger siblings Taylor, Malichai and Malcolm. Interested in music from a young age, she started giving public performances as a little girl. She even opened for Smokey Robinson at a Stevie Wonder tribute concert when she was 12 years old! Even before hitting the teens the youngster was sure that music was her calling and looked forward to making it big as a singer in future.
Alexis Jordan auditioned for the first season of ‘America's Got Talent’ in 2006. Her rendition of Whitney Houston's ‘I Have Nothing’ got her past the audition and she made it through to the next round. She was able to successfully clear several rounds before being eliminated in the semifinals. The young girl however did not lose hope and started uploading cover songs on YouTube. Her efforts eventually paid off. Within a couple of years her videos had raked up millions of views and this exposure gained her the attention of production team Stargate and rapper Jay-Z. Soon Jordan was signed to a contract and released her debut single, ‘Happiness’ in 2010. The single, which proved to be a big hit, was followed by the release of her debut self-titled album in 2011. The album too became a massive hit, debuting on the UK Albums Chart at No. 9 and on the Australian Albums Chart at No. 11. It also received generally positive reviews from music critics for its upbeat lyrics. Along with her hit single ‘Happiness,’ the album also featured songs like ‘Good Girl,’ ‘Hush Hush,’ ‘Habit,’ and ‘Say That.’ While her musical career seemed to be on a roll in 2011, it gradually fizzled out over the years. She is yet to release another album and has not been much active on the music scene. She has, however, ventured into television in the meantime and had made guest appearances on a few shows and series.
In 2011, Alexis Jordan won the ESKA Music Award for International Hit of the Year for her single ‘Happiness.’
