Alex Lawther was born on May 4, 1995, in Petersfield, Hampshire, England. His parents are both lawyers. He has two elder siblings: his elder brother is producer Cameron Lawther of ‘World War Z’ and ‘Fury’ fame, and his elder sister is Ellie Lawther, who works in public policy. As a child, Alex made his own games and played alone. This initiative to entertain himself infused in him the desire to become an actor.

In school, he played Ratty in the stage play ‘The Wind in the Willows’. In 2009, while he was attending Churcher's College, he wrote and developed a play as a part of his drama club. In 2010, he worked with his brother in ‘The Fear’. He learned acting at the National Youth Theatre. Alex had stated in an interview that despite his performances in TV series and films, he recognized himself as an actor only when he started earning enough money to pay his own rent and taxes.

Alex Lawther debuted in his acting career at the age of 16, when he was featured as John Blakemore in David Hare's play ‘South Downs’. In 2014, he debuted in feature films with the historical thriller, ‘The Imitation Game’. According to the director of the film, Alex’s performance in the film gave him goose bumps. His brilliant performance not only earned him critical acclaim and the London Film Critics' Circle Award, but also helped him to rise to stardom.

In 2015, he starred in the critically acclaimed drama film ‘X+Y’. He played his first lead role as Elliot in Andrew Steggall’s film ‘Departure’ along with Juliet Stevenson. The following year, he played the lead role of Kenny in ‘Shut Up and Dance’, and was highly recognized as a talented actor. In 2017, he was seen in the television series, ‘The End of the F- - - ing World’, and his performance earned him much praise.
