Alex Garland was born as Alexander Medawar Garland on 26 May 1970 in London, England to political cartoonist Nicholas Garland and psychologist Caroline. He is a grandson of the Nobel Prize-winning biologist Peter Medawar. He attended the University of Manchester and graduated from there with a degree in history of art. Talking about Garland’s love life, he is married to British actress and director Paloma Baeza. As of now, the couple has two kids.

In 1996, Alex Garland's first novel titled ‘The Beach’ was published. This novel is based on his own travel experiences across Europe and the Philippines. It was later developed into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio. In 1998, Garland got his second novel ‘The Tesseract’ published. This book explores concepts like love and violence under extraordinary circumstances.

Career

In 2002, he wrote the screenplay for the horror flick ‘28 Days Later’. The success of the film earned him international acclaim. Three years later, he wrote the script for a screen adaptation of the video game franchise ‘Halo,’ though the movie was later cancelled. Garland then wrote the screenplay for an American science fiction thriller flick titled ‘Sunshine’. Soon after this, he served as an executive producer for the sequel to ‘28 Days Later,’ titled ‘28 Weeks Later’.

In 2010, he wrote the screenplay for the romantic drama film ‘Never Let Me Go’. The movie was based on the novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro. It received positive reviews from the critics. He wrote the script for ‘Dredd’ which was adapted from a comic book series from 2000; the film was released in 2012. Garland served as a co-writer for a video game called ‘Enslaved: Odyssey to the West’. In 2013, he served as a story supervisor for the video game ‘DmC: ‘Devil May Cry’. Two years later, he made his directorial debut with ‘Ex Machina,’ a feature movie based on his own story and screenplay. The movie was a major commercial hit; made on a budget of $15 million, it earned $37 million at the box office. He wrote and directed his second film titled ‘Annihilation’ which was released in February 2018.
