President Muhammadu Buhari has tasked the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) in Niger State with the manufacturing of laboratory apparatus to improve science education in Nigeria. SEDI has also been charged with developing systems for mass-producing scientific equipment for research, industries, and higher institutions. SEDI’s Managing Director, Prof Mohammed Baba Ndaliman, distributed various kits for science practical in schools, including Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Technology, Integrated Science, and Mathematics, to selected primary and secondary schools in Niger State. The institute has donated Primary Science Kits (PSK), Junior Science Kits (JSK), Senior Science Kits (SSK), and Mathematical Kits at a cost of N6.4 million. The beneficiaries were selected based on data indicating that the schools had advanced in using the kits produced by the institute. Hannatu Jibril Salihu, the Niger State commissioner for education, believes that the institute’s production and donation of kits to schools will improve the quality of science education in the state.

SEDI, based in Niger State, has also been charged with developing systems for the mass production of scientific equipment for research, industries, and higher institutions. The institute will be responsible for measuring and controlling instruments for electrical electronics, mechanical workshops, and artisans.
SEDI’s Managing Director, Prof Mohammed Baba Ndaliman, revealed that the institute has lived up to its mandate by developing several kits for science practical in schools. The kits produced by SEDI for various science subjects, including Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Technology, Integrated Science, and Mathematics, were distributed to selected primary and secondary schools in Niger State. The institute donated Primary Science Kits (PSK), Junior Science Kits (JSK), Senior Science Kits (SSK), and Mathematical Kits at a cost of N6.4 million.
The beneficiaries were selected based on available data indicating that the schools had advanced in using the kits produced by the institute. Prof Ndaliman also stated that the institute would establish a monitoring system to get feedback on the performance of the distributed kits by the teachers and through monitoring of examination results of common entrance, West African Examinations Council, and National Examinations Council of the user schools.
The production and donation of kits to schools by the institute would go a long way in improving teaching and learning of sciences in the state, according to Hannatu Jibril Salihu, the Niger State commissioner for education. However, the challenge is getting stakeholders to be more aware of the institute’s work and benefits.
Overall, the President’s mandate for SEDI to manufacture laboratory apparatus is a step in the right direction towards improving the quality of education in Nigeria. It is hoped that the institute will continue to deliver on its responsibilities and promote science education in the country.
