Physicist Valerie Browning appointed AIP Director

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has appointed physicist Valerie Browning as the newest member of the Institute’s Board of Directors. Browning is the Vice President for Research and Technology in the Corporate Technology Office at Lockheed Martin. She will serve a three-year term and hopes to advocate for resources to support a diverse, equitable, and inclusive physical science community. The Board of Directors provides strategic leadership to ensure that AIP keeps pace with the changing needs of the global science community. AIP’s mission is to advance, promote, and serve the physical sciences for the benefit of humanity. It operates as a federation, supporting the success of its 10 Member Societies, and as an institute, using policy analysis, social science, and historical research to promote future progress in the physical sciences. AIP is a 501(c)(3) membership corporation of scientific societies.

Physicist Valerie Browning has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Physics (AIP). Browning is the Vice President for Research and Technology at Lockheed Martin’s Corporate Technology Office, where she leads research and design projects. Her appointment is effective March 24, and she will serve a three-year term. Browning earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Virginia Tech, a Master of Science in Physics from the University of Maryland, and a Ph.D. in Physics from the Catholic University of America. Before joining Lockheed Martin, Browning served as the Acting Director of Defense Research & Engineering for Research & Technology, Director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Defense Sciences Office, Chief Technology Officer for HELM System Solutions Inc., and a research physicist at the Naval Research Laboratory. AIP’s Board of Directors provides strategic leadership for the institute, and Browning’s appointment is expected to bring valuable perspectives to the team. Browning’s goals as an AIP board member include advocating for resources to support a diverse, equitable, and inclusive physical science community and informing public policies that value contributions from the physical sciences.
