Young Australian Scientists Attend Prestigious Lindau Meeting

Nine young Australian scientists have been selected to attend the 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau, Germany, from June 25th to June 30th, 2023. The event will bring together 40 Nobel laureates and 635 young scientists from over 90 countries to focus on Medicine and Physiology. The Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) will sponsor the Lindau SIEF-AAS Fellows to participate in the event, and the Academy Fellow Professor Jennie Brand-Miller will lead the SIEF Research Innovation Tour. The tour will highlight some of Germany’s best research and development facilities related to medicine and physiology.

The Lindau SIEF-AAS Fellows will receive a grant to cover their attendance at the event and take part in the SIEF Research Innovation Tour. The young researchers selected to attend the meeting in 2023 are from several Australian universities and are focused on researching microbiome, infectious disease, stem cells, cardiovascular development, nanoparticles, andrology, gynecology, infertility, reproduction, alcohol-health epidemiology, genomic risk for complex disorders, ex-vivo models of the olfactory system, and the gut microbiota’s role in disease development.

The Lindau SIEF-AAS Fellows will participate in the event, and a grant will be provided to facilitate their attendance. The Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF), with the support of the Australian Academy of Science (AAS), administers the grants.

The SIEF Research Innovation Tour will also be included in the grant for the Lindau SIEF-AAS Fellows. The tour will be led by Academy Fellow Professor Jennie Brand-Miller and will highlight the best research and development facilities in Germany related to medicine and physiology.

The Lindau SIEF-AAS Fellows selected for the event include Dr Siobhon Egan of Murdoch University, whose research focuses on systems biology and microbiome and infectious disease; Dr Lynn Nazareth of CSIRO, who investigates ex-vivo models of the olfactory system to study viral infections; Dr William Reay of the University of Newcastle, who researches clinically actionable components of genomic risk for complex disorders; Dr Enakshi Sinniah of the University of Queensland, who studies stem cells and cardiovascular development; Miss Cottrell Tamessar of the University of Newcastle, whose research is centered around nanoparticles, andrology, gynecology, infertility, and reproduction; and Ms Rachel Visontay of the University of Sydney, who studies alcohol-health epidemiology.

Additionally, three of the SIEF-AAS Fellows from the field of medicine and physiology who attended the 70th meeting virtually have been invited to participate in-person and will travel with the selected cohort to Lindau.

Three more Australian researchers have been selected to attend the 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting. The event will take place in Lindau, Germany, from June 25th to June 30th, 2023. The three new researchers include Dr Ifrah Abdullahi of La Trobe University, who is researching the health and developmental outcomes of children of immigrant backgrounds; Dr David Klyne of the University of Queensland, who is studying why chronic pain develops and how to prevent it; and Dr Kate Secombe of the University of Adelaide, who is investigating the gut microbiota’s role in disease development and the potential therapeutic applications of altering the microbiota.
