Fishermen demonstrate against trawlers "who plunder the resource"
"Big ships like that, it smashes everything", criticize the members of the association of linemen from the tip of Brittany
Fishermen in firecracker against other fishermen. On Tuesday, about fifty Breton gillnetters gathered in front of the Audierne auction ( Finistère ) to protest against the practices of French trawlers. The demonstrators criticize the methods of these large ships which “waste and plunder the fish resource ”.“We get beaten up by trawlers who have administrative resources and economic weight that we do not have. Big ships like that, it smashes everything, ”assures Thomas Le Gall, a fisherman on a liner in Audierne.
Organized by the Association des lineurs de la pointe de Bretagne, the gathering aims to alert the authorities to the dangers of this overfishing.“It's legal even if according to our code of conduct, trawlers avoid getting too close to the coast. It is not at all their market ”, assures Ken Kawahara, president of the association.
The association of linemen from the tip of Brittany accuses the trawlers of fishing for sea bream, pagres, or sea bass by dozens and tens of tons when the market cannot absorb these quantities. "This morning, of the 8.5 tonnes of sea bream put on the market, only 500 kg were sold and the rest, ie several tens of thousands of fish, were destroyed", added the fisherman for whom this action foreshadows “ the post-Brexit war between the coastal strip and the offshore strip”.
