University President Peter Salovey has taken steps to consolidate the University’s major announcements since 2016 onto the Office of the President’s website. This website update is available for faculty, staff, students, and alumni to review. The move comes as Salovey approaches his 10-year anniversary as University President, having taken office in 2013. Salovey encouraged students to read about the work that he and the community have done together over the years, noting the large number of announcements that he has made during his presidency regarding community inclusion and excellence, as well as advancements in academic programming.
Salovey shared that, over the years, there have been many emails and statements, which are spread across multiple websites, so he decided to create a single location where members of the community could review the information. The updated website highlights Salovey’s vision statement, which claims that Yale’s initiatives build off the goals he described in his 2013 inaugural address, including a greater investment in teaching and research, international partnerships, and more inclusive access to a Yale College education.
On the website’s front page, Salovey thanks alumni, parents, and friends of the University who contributed to Yale through the “For Humanity” Capital Campaign. The website notes that the vision for Yale’s future is powered by the work of all members of the Yale community.
Under the Arts and Humanities initiative, Salovey highlighted new University facilities, including the refurbishment of the Humanities Quadrangle, the Digital Humanities Lab, and the recently announced new facility for students at the School of Drama, as well as the theater and performance communities at Yale College.
University President Peter Salovey has highlighted various new initiatives in the sciences and social sciences in his update of the University’s website. These include the creation of the Tobin Center for Economic Policy, the Data Intensive Social Science Center, the Institute for Foundations of Data Science, and 87 Trumbull St. Additionally, Salovey discussed the Yale Science Building, the renovated Wright Laboratory, and the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale.
In the social sciences, Salovey highlighted the founding of the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs, the first professional school established by Yale since 1976, and the Tobin Center. Salovey also outlined the 87 Trumbull St. facility that will house faculty and research associated with the Department of Economics and the Tobin Center, along with the Data Intensive Social Science Center and the Institute for Foundations of Data Science.
In the sciences, Salovey noted the renovation of the Wright Laboratory, the Yale Science Building, and the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale. He also discussed the planned renovation of lower Hillhouse Avenue to house the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the expansion of the Yale Peabody Museum, which is set to reopen in 2024 with free public admission.
Aside from academic priorities, the updated website also highlights Yale’s commitment to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion. According to University Secretary Kimberly Goff-Crews, this commitment is reflected in each of the initiatives and specifically through Belonging at Yale.
The new website includes dozens of email communications sent by University administrators to students, faculty, and staff since 2016. University Provost Scott Strobel wrote in a 2019 email that the University’s success in attracting donor interest is coming directly from the compelling story that they are able to tell.
Goff-Crews believes that the new webpages demonstrate how interconnected Yale’s work is and the progress that they have made together.
The “Community Inclusion and Excellence” section on the Yale President’s website describes four main developments, including Belonging at Yale, the Yale and Slavery working group, the Pennington Fellowship, and Yale’s partnership with New Haven. Belonging at Yale is an umbrella term for the University’s major DEI efforts. The Yale and Slavery working group was established in October 2020 to examine Yale’s historical ties to slavery. The Pennington Fellowship will provide financial support to New Haven high school students who choose to attend historically Black colleges and universities. Lastly, Yale’s partnership with New Haven includes an increased voluntary contribution of $135 million over six years. The full list of announcements is available to view on the Yale President’s website.
