Wind warnings issued for Greater Victoria on western Vancouver Island 1

Get ready Vancouver Island: A strong low pressure system ensures a windy start to the week. And it doesn’t get any better from there.

Wind warnings have been issued for Vancouver Island’s west and south coasts, with Environment Canada urging residents to prepare for gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour beginning Monday.

The strong winds are expected to be the result of a low-pressure system moving from the Gulf of Alaska to central BC, which will then result in westerly winds over BC’s south coast Monday evening.

Westerly winds of 70 km/h gusting to 100 are expected in Greater Victoria near the Strait of Juan De Fuca, while northwesterly winds of 80 km/h and gusting to 100 are expected in western Vancouver Island.

Winds will ease in both regions through Tuesday morning as winds move further inland. But after that, get ready for cold.

Environment Canada is forecasting cold Arctic downdrafts for the region settling Wednesday through Friday.

“Normal values for this period are usually highs of nine degrees and lows near plus two,” said Ken Dosanjh, meteorologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada.

But this week Greater Victoria is more likely to see highs drop by 3C and overnight lows to -6C through Thursday – a full eight degrees below the seasonal temperature for Victoria International Airport’s weather station.

Not only that, the South Island has a chance of late February thunderstorms later in the week, while full snow is forecast further north.

It’s getting even colder in the north as Port Hardy drops to a low of -9C, a staggering 11 degrees below normal, on Thursday night, according to Environment Canada.

But there’s wind first, and people on the island’s west and south coasts should be aware of potential hazards like power outages and fallen branches, Environment Canada said in its alert. Events with flysheets and awnings should be closely monitored to avoid damage from the gusty winds.

Environment Canada is asking residents to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts and to report any severe weather to [email protected] or tweet using the hashtag #BCStorm.
