When does MLS start?

Both in the United States of America and abroad, there is a growing number of soccer fans who are interested in Major League Soccer (MLS) and the good news for them is that the new season will start soon.

The 2022 season ended in exciting fashion, followed by the World Cup in Qatar, which saw renewed interest in football in the United States. MLS clubs are hoping interest in the national team will spill over into domestic football as the new season begins.

The first weekend should be a thriller with 13 games to get stuck into. So here’s everything you need to know about the new campaign.

The MLS season begins on Saturday February 25th and as previously mentioned there will be 13 games to watch. The Los Angeles Derby is one of the games that fans can look forward to.

The regular season ends on October 21st and then the playoffs begin. It is not yet clear when they will begin and end.

MLS week 1 fixtures

In 2023, 29 clubs will take part in MLS and all will play 34 games, with the schedule already confirmed by the league. The list of participating teams can be seen below.

The 29 teams in MLS are geographically divided into Western and Eastern conferences and play each team in their conference home and away. There are 15 teams in the Eastern Conference, so they have 28 games in their conference. They then also play a game against six different Western Conference opponents, making for another six games.

The 14 teams of the Western Conference all play each other twice, so 26 games. They also then play a game against one or two opponents from their own conference and then a game against six or seven opponents from the Eastern Conference.

The teams that finish first in each conference qualify for the conference semifinals. Those finishing 2nd through 7th in each conference advance to the first round of the playoffs, all with the goal of reaching the MLS Cup Finals. The date for this final in 2023 has yet to be announced.

To watch MLS in the UK and Canada this season, you’ll need an Apple TV subscription after they strike a new rights deal.

In the United States of America some of the games will be shown on cable television via FOX and FS1. In America’s opening weekend, the only game to be broadcast on FOX will be Nashville SC vs. NYCFC.

This season there is an interruption that has never happened before. For the first time ever, all 47 clubs in MLS and LIGA MX (Mexico) will compete in a redesigned Leagues Cup. The MLS regular season will be suspended after the July 15 Leagues Cup games and will resume on August 20.

The champion of the MLS Cup in 2022 was Los Angeles FC. They led the Western Conference and made it to the finals, held at Banc of California Stadium.

They faced Philadelphia Union and it was a very dramatic final. It featured the last two goals scored in an MLS Cup playoff game, when both Jack Elliott and Gareth Bale scored in added time, ending the game 3-3 after overtime. LAFC won the subsequent penalty shoot-out 3-0.
