HATAY, Turkey – Rescuers in Hatay, Turkey managed to pull a small dog from the rubble of a collapsed building after a deadly earthquake devastated the area earlier this month, and the entire rescue has been filmed.
The video, recorded by Gurcan Ozturk on February 8, shows the dog, named Pambuk, taking sips of water while patiently waiting to be freed from the rubble by rescuers.
According to an Instagram post, the owner of Pambuk had been in intensive care at a nearby hospital following the catastrophic earthquakes. Ozturk told Storyful that the dog’s family contacted him.
According to reports, more than 46,000 people were killed when earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria two weeks ago. Most of these deaths have been reported in Turkey.
The earthquake is the deadliest in Turkey’s modern history
The death toll continues to rise in Turkey and Syria nearly two weeks after the series of catastrophic earthquakes, making it the deadliest disaster in modern Turkish history.
The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.8, hit the region on February 6 at 4:17 a.m. local time (8:17 p.m. EST on February 5). This was almost immediately followed by a strong aftershock of magnitude 6.7, according to the US Geological Survey.
Nine hours later, a powerful 7.5 magnitude aftershock hit the area – one of thousands of aftershocks of varying magnitude that rocked the region for weeks.
