Notably, those notes noted that in 2021, China’s former Consul General in Vancouver, Tong Xiaoling, bragged about how she helped defeat two Conservative MPs, Kenny Chiu in Steveston Richmond-East, led by Liberal candidate Parm Bains and longtime Richmond Center MP was won by Alice Wong, who lost to Liberal candidate Wilson Miao.

Chiu subsequently told Postmedia News that he was not surprised by the claim that the 2021 campaign that unseated him was the subject of covert interference from China’s former consul in Vancouver.

Chiu characterized Beijing’s efforts as “armed nationalism and potential damage to our multicultural fabric in Canada (by) manipulating diaspora communities in Canada”.

The influence was allegedly due to false information posted on social media channels.

The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Vancouver called the allegations “defamation and discrediting of China”.

“The Chinese side has made it clear on many occasions that China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs and has never interfered in any way with Canadian elections or internal affairs,” the government statement read.

“Furthermore, the relevant Canadian media’s practice of spreading false information about the Consulate General and consular officials, and attacking China’s domestic and foreign policies with their ulterior motives and malicious intentions will damage the friendship and interests of the peoples of China and Canada. seriously disrupting the consulate’s performance of consular duties under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the China-Canada Bilateral Consular Agreement.”

Speaking to reporters last Friday, Trudeau said he believes China is trying to interfere in Canada’s democracy, including during the elections, but Canadian security and intelligence agencies “have worked very hard in recent years” to counter such efforts , to ensure that Canadian institutions are safe.

“This is not a new phenomenon. This is something that countries around the world have been grappling with for a long time, and Canada is no exception. All Canadians can have complete confidence that the results of the 2019 and 2021 elections were determined by Canadians and only Canadians at the voting booth,” Trudeau said in reference to the Globe and Mail story.
