The disAbility Law Center of Virginia (dLCV) is hosting its eighth annual fundraising gala on Friday, April 14th, from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. at the Dewey Gottwald Center at the Science Museum of Virginia. The event is themed ‘Once Upon a Time’ and will celebrate the power of storytelling to break down stigmas.
The dLCV works to protect and advocate for the legal rights of people with various disabilities, including mental illness. According to dLCV board member Zipporah Levi-Shackleford, the organization is focused on promoting the independence, choice, and self-determination of people with disabilities, as well as monitoring facilities such as mental health institutions.
The organization’s sponsoring partner for the gala is Virginia Housing, which provides affordable housing to Virginians. Virginia Housing, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, helped create over 5,700 rental units, and dispersed over $1,800,000 in accessibility grants, which help with accessibility modifications.
