Remember David Cronenberg’s dead wrestlers? While the acclaimed director is more associated with the body horror genre, no doubt due to movies like VideodroMe And The fly, its forays into other genres are as chilling as its most grotesque productions. In the case of dead wrestlers, Cronenberg did a fantastic job portraying a manipulative pair of twins named Elliot and Beverly whose illegal behavior ultimately leads to their downfall. It’s a fantastic thriller and arguably one of Cronenberg’s best. Apparently it was good enough to warrant a reimagining on Prime Video.

Yes, Cronenbergs dead wrestlers gets the remake treatment at the streaming giant, but with a twist. Not only will it be adapted into a six-episode series, but there will also be some pretty significant changes to the casting and possibly the overall story. Will these changes help or hinder the upcoming series? We’ll just have to wait and see. For now, at least, we can cover pretty much everything we know about Prime Videos dead wrestlers.
Dead Ringers: The Storyline
Prime video
The plot of Prime Video dead wrestlers will have a setup similar to the original 1988 film. A pair of twins, Elliot and Beverly Mantle, both share the same doctor’s office. Like most twins, they share pretty much everything with each other. They just go a step further than most. Drugs, sexual partners, and other unethical practices are an integral part of their daily lives. While further details remain elusive at this time, it’s possible we’ll see some minor changes to the Mantle twins.

Coinciding with a rewrite by Jeremy Irons, it’s possible the Mantle twins’ motivations may have changed as well. While the two will likely remain as gynecologists, their focus has shifted from seeking illicit relationships with their patients to advancing the field of women’s health care. It’s not like they’re going to approach it in a totally ethical way, mind you, but it’s still something worth acknowledging. Given the change in pacing and plot that makes six episodes possible, it seems appropriate to further differentiate Prime Video’s shot from the original film.
Dead Ringers: The Cast & Crew
Prime video
As previously mentioned, the role of Elliot and Beverly Mantle will not be played by a returning Jeremy Irons. Instead, in an interesting decision, both roles are now played by Rachel Weisz. The prolific actress has appeared in a variety of genre films of varying degrees of fame. Most may remember her significant role as Evelyn Carnahan in both The Mummy And The mummy returns. She also starred alongside Colin Farrell in the lobsterMark Wahlberg in The lovely bonesand Keanu Reeves constantine.
Weisz is given the task of playing two very different characters who share a deep bond. In the original dead wrestlers, Elliot Mantle is cold, confident and cynical, while Beverly is rather passive in comparison. Despite this, Beverly is the first of the twins to spiral headlong into drug abuse and paranoid delusions after a twisted affair. Beverly would ultimately kill Elliot in the original film before presumably dying in his late brother’s arms. While the twins’ motivation can be changed in Prime Video dead wrestlerswhich focuses less on inappropriate sexual relations and more on the advancement of women’s health care, we can reasonably expect a similar dynamic between Weisz’s performances.
