The Everything Everywhere All at Once Helmers were part of a long list of DGA Awards speakers who complimented the The Fabelmans director.
Although the big winners of the 2023 Directors Guild of America Awards were Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (AKA Daniels), who took home the Theatrical Feature Film Award for their imaginative second film, Everything Everywhere All at Once, the name was on everyone’s mind Steven Spielberg was the mouth of almost every director who took to the stage at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday.
His most personal film to date, The Fabelmans has long been the front-runner for the Best Picture Oscar, having won the People’s Choice Award at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and earned Golden Globes for Best Picture – Drama and Best Director . Still, the Daniels-directed multiversal dramedy of A24, which garnered more critical acclaim, has gotten a second wind nearly a year after Michelle Yeoh’s vehicle premiered at SXSW. The pair are now the third directing duo to ever win the award and are considered favorites for the Best Director Oscar, along with 17 out of 20 recent DGA award winners (including Jane Campion last year).

With just one Original Screenplay nomination at Sunday’s BAFTAs, The Fabelmans needs to win Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild to show any signs of strength against the rising Everything Everywhere All at Once. before final Oscar voting begins on March 2nd.
Because at the DGA Awards, each nominated feature film has to give an acceptance speech before finally announcing the winner (which in this case resulted in four acceptance speeches for Everything Everywhere All at Once, just as disgruntled host Judd Apatow predicted ). The first peer to cite 13-time DGA Award nominee Spielberg was Scheinert, with a joking salute to him who specifically credited him as one of the “storytellers and filmmakers who inspired this movie that we ripped off.” .
Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski took a more subtle approach. “When you see a great film on the big screen, it does something to you, something lasting. And I know that’s true because I couldn’t tell you exactly what I was doing two weeks ago, but I know what I was doing on Saturday June 13, 1981,” the 48-year-old filmmaker said at the beginning from his speech. The answer? Watching poisonous snakes, deadly booby traps and melting Nazis in Raiders of the Lost Ark, “one can imagine how surreal it is to be nominated alongside Steven Spielberg.”

TÁR director Todd Field happened to mention the same film in his acceptance speech, saying he watched the first Indiana Jones adventure 350 times when he was a projectionist in high school, and later in his career was inspired by Spielberg himself said that “the [award] what matters is a DGA.” Field concluded by quoting The Fabelmans to Michelle Williams and the rest of the cast, all of whom starred Spielberg front and center Seated near the center of the stage.
When it was the turn of The Fabelmans filmmaker to speak, after listing his concerns about filming – from reactions like, “Your mother cheated on your father, and we hate her,” to requests like, “Who is John Ford?” and “Why didn’t you direct Indy 5?” – In return, Spielberg thanked his competitors and singled out the Daniels. “By the way, that was the best bagel I’ve ever eaten,” Spielberg said. “Thanks for that.”
It should also be noted that he was introduced by Dune director Denis Villenueve. “The Fabelmans is the best film ever made about the power of cinema. It’s a miracle,” said the Québécois filmmaker, who was nominated last year. “To say I was deeply moved by this film is an understatement. ‘The Fabelmans’ is a sheer act of artistic generosity, created by one of the greatest filmmakers of our time.”
In the closing acceptance speech of the night when they were announced as winners of the Theatrical Feature Film Award, Everything Everywhere All at Once co-director Kwan best summed up the camaraderie the nominees now feel among themselves, including the many – dear Spielberg. “What I’m going to take away from this season more than anything, more than the recognition we’re getting, is just your warmth, your curiosity, your enthusiasm,” Kwan said. “Every time we break bread or share a stage, I leave so inspired. And it’s just a nice reminder that even the best filmmakers in this industry, even the legends in this industry, deep down, they’re just kids looking forward to making movies.”
