Diane was born on January 30, 1948, in Brooklyn to Agnes (Kadavy) and Louis Otto. She spent most of her childhood in Garden City South on Long Island. She attended The Mary Louis Academy, graduating in 1966. She then earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Science in Education from St. John’s University in Queens.

Career and Contributions

Diane joined the faculty of Regis High School in Manhattan in September 1972, where she remained until her retirement in June 2009 due to declining health. During her 37-year tenure, she taught Biology, Advanced Biology, Chemistry, and Health Science. She was a prominent figure in the implementation of the school’s Science Research Program and acted as Science Department Chair for 15 years. Diane was also involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, most notably as the Costume Director for the Regis Dramatics Society for nearly three decades, and as a director and co-director of several productions. She also moderated clubs and publications, organized special events, and helped guide the efforts of the Bookstore & Textbook Staff.

Diane was known for being clear and demanding in her expectations of her students, but fair and kind in her response to their efforts. Her colleagues appreciated her gentility and straightforwardness. Her equanimity set her apart even among other consummate professionals.

Diane was predeceased by her parents and her beloved sister, Mary. She is survived by Frank, her husband of 45 years; brothers, Richard and John; sisters, Eileen, Susanne, and Carolyn; and nine nieces and nephews. Within her immediate family, she was known for her graciousness and selflessness as a spouse and her kindness as an older sister.
