Western Australia shines at AVALON 2023 with innovative defence and space tech

AVALON 2023, Australia’s largest biennial airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition, showcased Western Australia’s innovative defence and space industries. The event had a strong Western Australian presence, with record-breaking attendances and the Defence West team showcasing their capabilities to an international audience. The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation’s Space team was also a co-exhibitor, highlighting Western Australia’s diverse space sector capabilities and the new opportunities created for WA space companies to participate in domestic and international supply chains. The Space team participated in several key engagements, including meetings with the Australian Space Agency, UK Space Agency, Polish Space Agency, and the Canadian High Commission. The event was highly successful, with the team emphasizing the innovative work being done by Western Australian companies in the defence, space, and aeronautical industries, as well as the translation capacity of the resources sector for relevant applications in other sectors.

An exhibit outlining Australia's space industry milestones at Avalon 2023

The AVALON 2023 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition had a strong Western Australian presence, with record-breaking attendances across the board. Senior members of the Defence West team were on the ground at AVALON, showcasing their wares and capabilities to an international audience of senior civil aviation, aerospace, space, defence industry, military and senior government personnel from around the world.

In attendance were the Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, Terry Healy MLA, the recently appointed Western Australian Defence Advocate RADM Phillip Spedding DSC AM RAN (Rtd) and the Honourable Kim Beazley AC. The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation’s Space team was also a co-exhibitor, showcasing Western Australia’s diverse space sector capabilities, advantageous geographic and environmental conditions for space infrastructure, as well as the new opportunities being created for WA space companies to participate in domestic and international supply chains.

The Space team had several key engagements at AVALON, including meetings with the Australian Space Agency, UK Space Agency, the Polish Space Agency, and the Canadian High Commission. They also spoke with Japanese space SMEs and representatives from Australian universities about their space research programs and study courses.

The exhibition halls included significant presences from the Australian Space Agency and Defence Space Command, as well as the diverse cross-sector capabilities across space, aerospace, and subsea on display by Australian SMEs. This supports the expansion of Australian sovereign space capabilities.

Overall, the event was highly successful with the team highlighting the innovative work being done by Western Australian companies in the defence, space, and aeronautical industries, as well as the translation capacity of the resources sector for relevant applications in other sectors. The energy was flying high, and the AVALON 2023 was bigger and better than ever, a testament to the impressive innovation of the Western Australian defence and space industries.
