Why Pence and Trump Split 1

Former Vice President Mike Pence has cited continued rhetoric by former President Trump related to the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol as the reason for the two going their separate ways. Despite leaving the White House amicably, Pence has increasingly split with Trump, with the former vice president running for a 2024 White House bid. Pence has criticized Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 riots and for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Although he has refused to testify in front of the federal special prosecutor investigating the former president and his actions on Jan. 6, Pence signaled he may be willing to testify on other issues related to Jan. 6. In a separate matter, Pence defended Trump over a New York investigation probing hush money payments to Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election, calling the potential arrest “politically motivated prosecution.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence Reveals Reason for Split with Former President Trump

Former Vice President Mike Pence

Former Vice President Mike Pence has revealed that the continued rhetoric by former President Trump related to the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol is the reason the two split despite leaving Washington amicably. Speaking in an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” Pence said that after the former president returned to that type of rhetoric in the spring of 2021, they have gone their separate ways. This comes after Pence has increasingly split with Trump in recent months, and he is anticipated to run for a 2024 White House bid.

While Pence has taken aim at Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 riots and for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, he has refused to testify in front of the federal special prosecutor that is investigating the former president and his actions on Jan. 6. However, Pence signaled in the interview with ABC that he may be willing to testify in front of the grand jury on other issues related to Jan. 6, just not his actions as president of the Senate.

“I know we did our duty that day,” Pence said. “I know the president continues to have a strong difference of opinion about my responsibilities that day… We all face the judgment of history and I believe in the fullness of time that history will hold Donald Trump accountable for the events of Jan. 6.”

Pence’s statement follows his spending time in early primary states like Iowa, where he has been taking aim at Trump for his role in the events surrounding the 2020 election. Despite this, the former vice president and the former president actually parted amicably when they left the White House on January 20, and spoke several times in the weeks that followed.

In the interview, Pence also made it clear that they do not want an executive branch to be able to haul legislators into court every time that there’s a policy dispute. Pence has directed his attorneys to make a strong case in defense of his role as president of the Senate, and he clarified that they are not asserting executive privilege, which may encompass other discussions.

“We simply don’t want an executive branch to be able to haul legislators into court every time that there’s a policy dispute. And so I’ve directed my attorneys to make a strong case in defense of my role as president of the Senate,” Pence said. “We’re not asserting executive privilege, which may encompass other discussions.”

As Pence continues to distance himself from Trump, it remains to be seen how this will impact his political aspirations and whether his criticism of the former president will resonate with the American people.

Former Vice President Pence Defends Trump over New York Investigation

Former Vice President Pence has defended former President Trump over a New York investigation probing hush money payments to Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. This comes as Trump said on social media that he expects to be arrested by Tuesday in connection to the investigation, calling on his supporters to protest the potential arrest. However, Pence said the arrest would be a “politically motivated prosecution,” standing by Trump’s side once again. The divisions between the two continue as Pence is anticipated to run for a 2024 White House bid.
