Maydell, who has worked on key digital dossiers such as the EU data strategy and the artificial intelligence (AI) law, believes that AI and other new technologies are vital enablers of the sustainable future that Europe is striving for. Maydell promoted the establishment of a working group within the EPP on AI and Sustainability two years ago. The group brings together colleagues, experts, and researchers to explore the applications of AI in areas such as energy efficiency and renewables. Maydell highlighted the urgency of the group’s work in the wake of Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukraine a year ago, which led to soaring energy prices and prompted Europe to reconsider its strategic dependencies on Russian gas and Chinese batteries.
Maydell stressed that Europe must not only put in place strict rules for each sector but also listen to entrepreneurs to create the working conditions necessary to implement AI solutions that can make this transition possible. At a recent event for stakeholders on AI and sustainability, Maydell saw real-life examples of what this type of technology can bring, such as a start-up working on energy storage and a Bulgarian company developing energy solutions with satellite services.
