TikTok CEO Shou Chew testified before Congress as lawmakers consider a potential federal ban on the app due to concerns about the Chinese government’s influence. A recent poll by SocialSphere found that while Generation Z voters are worried about TikTok’s ties to China, they do not support a complete ban. The poll surveyed 1,607 registered voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points. The Biden administration had previously threatened to ban TikTok in the US if ByteDance does not sell to an American company. Despite the concerns, TikTok remains popular among Gen Z voters, with 71% of those surveyed saying they had an active account. In comparison, only 43% of millennials reported the same. TikTok came in second place for Gen Z voters, just behind Instagram.
Gen Z Voters Concerned About TikTok’s Ties to China, But Oppose Full Ban: Poll
A recent poll by SocialSphere has found that while most Generation Z voters aged between 18-26 are worried about China-based parent company ByteDance’s potential influence over the video-sharing app TikTok, they do not support a complete federal ban on the platform. Instead, 51% of Gen Z voters are concerned about TikTok’s ownership by a Chinese company, which has reported close ties with the Chinese Communist Party. This concern is shared by 64% of millennial voters aged between 27-42.
Although 49% of millennial voters said they support a nationwide ban on the app if its Chinese owners don’t sell to a US operator, only 34% of Gen Z voters said they felt the same way. TikTok has over 150 million users in the US, and 71% of Gen Z voters said they had an active account, with “active” meaning it had been used in the last 30 days. This is in contrast to only 43% of millennials who reported an active account.
When it comes to other social media apps, TikTok came in second place for Gen Z voters, just behind Instagram. 76% of Gen Z voters said they had an active Instagram account, while Facebook was by far the most popular app among millennials, with 79% saying they have an active account. In terms of activity on Instagram, 69% of millennials reported using it regularly.
The poll was taken on Wednesday and coincides with increased congressional scrutiny on TikTok, fueled by concerns that the Chinese government could access US user data.
The increased scrutiny has led to a battle over the social media app, with TikTok creators appearing on Capitol Hill to rally against the proposed ban. The poll’s results suggest that Gen Z voters, who make up a significant portion of TikTok’s user base, do not support a complete ban on the platform.
