State Government Appoints New Advisory Group on Homelessness

In a move to address homelessness, the State Government has created a new Housing First Homelessness Advisory Group. The group comprises 17 individuals, including respected community and government leaders, experts, and individuals with lived experience.

The advisory group will focus on Housing First approaches to reduce rough sleeping and is part of the State Government’s efforts to reform the homeless sector. The group is made up of 11 women and six men, with expertise from areas such as tenancy law, front-line support services, local government, and community housing organizations. The membership also includes people who have personal or family experience of homelessness or who have delivered services in regional and remote areas of Western Australia.

The Housing First Homelessness Advisory Group will guide the implementation of the 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness 2020-30 (Strategy), which aims to support rough sleepers by providing a Housing First approach and a No Wrong Door approach to the homelessness sector. The group will provide advice to the Minister for Homelessness, addressing barriers in the system.

The group will meet quarterly and will be chaired by Mr. Mike Rowe, Director-General of the Department of Communities. The group’s other 16 members are individuals who have been appointed based on their experience and expertise in the sector. They include Mr. Andrew Brien, Chief Executive Officer of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder; Ms. Bettina (Tina) Ugle, Managing Director of Noongar Mia Mia; and Ms. Cath Hart, Chief Executive Officer of the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia, among others.

Other homeless reforms introduced by the State Government include assisting a further 100 rough sleepers into 100 social homes in a supported landlord model in partnership with Housing Choices. The reforms aim to provide much-needed assistance to those experiencing homelessness in Western Australia.
