Northern Virginia Congressman Don Beyer has decided to go back to school and pursue a graduate degree in computer science with a focus on machine learning at George Mason University. Beyer, who represents Arlington, Alexandria City, Falls Church, and parts of Fairfax County, is a 72-year-old part-time student.
Beyer, a 1972 graduate of Williams College in Massachusetts, has always loved learning, and many of his family and friends have graduate degrees. He stated that he is “catching up at the age of 72.” However, his course of study is not easy, and he is currently completing required credits in calculus, multi-variable calculus, and discrete mathematics.
The congressman is a member of the United States Congressional Joint Economic Committee and the House Artificial Intelligence Caucus. The House Artificial Intelligence Caucus had six members last year, but it has grown to 40 members this year, and Beyer believes that it could reach 100 members by the summer. He thinks that the caucus could help Congress determine what regulations are necessary to protect against the potential negative impacts of artificial intelligence.
