Karnataka Scraps Minority Quota

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend a conference of five southern states and three Union territories on tackling drug trafficking in Bengaluru. The conference aims to destroy 75,000 kg of drugs under the central government’s ‘zero tolerance to drugs’ initiative. The Karnataka government has decided to scrap the four per cent quota for minorities and add it to the existing quota of two dominant communities of the state, Vokkaligas and Lingayats. The cabinet has decided to bring religious minorities under the EWS category.

Prime Minister Modi addressed the people of Chikkaballapur, Karnataka, stating that India is on its way to becoming a developed nation with the Sabka Prayaas initiative. He also accused certain political parties of using languages for their own selfish reasons and vote-bank politics.

In Karnataka, an open letter was submitted to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai by writers, poets, educationists, intellectuals, and civil society organisations urging the abolition of the contractual labour system and the inclusion of all garbage vehicle drivers, cleaners, and loaders under the direct payment system. This letter came after the ongoing protest by solid waste management workers in the state, who have the same demands.

Social activist Gireesh Achar filed a complaint with Lokayukta against officials of the Karnataka revenue and forest department for not recovering 3,111 acres of forest land in Soraba and Sagar taluks in Shivamogga district from encroachers. Achar stated that the lands were illegally granted to more than 1,000 people between 2013 and 2017 by the then tehsildar of Sagar taluk, L B Chandrashekar.

During his visit to Bengaluru, Amit Shah oversaw the destruction of 9,200 kg of seized drugs worth Rs 1,235 crore.

The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, will oversee the destruction of 9,298 kg of seized drugs valued at Rs 1,235 crore during the course of a southern regional conference on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ on Friday in Bengaluru. The event is part of the central government’s ‘zero tolerance to drugs’ initiative, which aims to destroy 75,000 kg of drugs under the campaign that began on June 1, 2022. The conference will focus on curbing drug trafficking through sea routes, coordinating between state and central drug enforcement agencies, and strategies for preventing drug abuse, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In other news, the Karnataka government has scrapped the four per cent quota for minorities and added it to the existing quota of two dominant communities of the state. Muslims were previously given 4 per cent reservation under the 2B classification of the OBC category, but it will now be divided into two equal parts and added to the existing quota of Vokkaligas and Lingayats. Two new reservation categories of 2C and 2D were created during the Belagavi Assembly Session last year. The cabinet has decided to bring religious minorities under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category.
